Walkthrough Laura Bow: The Colonel’s Bequest.

Notes: While in the course of the game frequently check the secret passage ways for clues. Also ask every person about every other person or any interesting things that you have found. Another imperitive thing to do is search everything that you pick up with Wilbur’s monocle.

Act I
7:00

You begin in the bedroom that you and Lillian Prune, your friend from University, share. Walk into the door on the right of your screen and you will find yourself in Ethel’s room. Ask her about all characters. (They include Beauregard, Blaze, Celie, Clarence, Ethel, Fifi, Gertie, Gloria, Henri, Jeeves, Laura, Lillian, Polly, Rudy and Wilbur.) Walk out of Ethel’s room then out of yours into the hall. At the end of the hall is the bathroom. Enter the door. You will find Lillian in there finishing up. When she leaves, look in the wastebasket and notice it’s empty. (If you’ve played the Leisure Suit Larry Series, it may humor you to use the toilet.), and if you want to use the shower save it first, a certain scene from psycho is repeated. Leave the room through the door you came through and walk to one of the cabinets up against the walls in the hall. Type “Move Cabinet” and miraculously, you find a hidden passage. There are Picture frames on each side of the wall. Walk up the one on the far side of the room and type “Look holes.” You will see either a scene with the Colonel and Fifi or Ethel and Lillian. After you finish go to the other cabinet and see the other scene (If you look through the holes on the painting on the other wall you won’t see anything of interest, so there is no point.). Walk down the bottom of the screen. Do not go near the banister or you will fall to your death. You can go in the rooms on either side of the hall but there is nothing of interest in there at this point. Upstairs are Fifi’s room and a locked door, again nothing of interest… yet. The door in front of the stairs is just an empty closet. Go down either of the staircases and you will find yourself in the main hall. Go to the room on the right. Take this chance to talk to Gertrude. Do it now because this is the only chance you will get. Before you leave the room look at the decanter of cognac on the counter. Go up one screen. Move the mirror. Look in the eyes if the painting closest to you. You will see a conversation between Clarence and Gertrude. They are speaking about Ethel. Leave the passage and cross to the clock. Move it to find yet another passageway. Look in both sets of holes. You will see a conversation between Gloria and Rudy about the Colonel. The other is just Wilbur sitting by himself. Leave the passage and go to the room where Wilbur is sitting (the room on the left-hand side of your screen at the end of the hall.). Gloria will walk in and you will see her threatening Wilbur. You can take this opportunity to ask Wilbur about everyone. You won’t get much out of him. He is perverted and will constantly come on to you. Go out of the room and down one screen. If you go to the parlor, which is across from the room Gloria is in, you can talk with Clarence. He is quite rude though. Gloria is not in the mood to talk right now. Now go up one screen and into the door on the right hand side. You will find yourself in the dining room. Continue right into the kitchen. You can talk with Celie, the cook. Now go to the icebox and type “Open icebox”. You find a soup bone. Now leave and go back into the hall and up the stairs. Go back into Gertrude and Gloria’s room (the first room on the left). Gertrude should be sleeping.

Act II
8:00

Walk out of the room then back in. The window will be open and a small table will be knocked over. Leave the room and go downstairs into the billiard room where Gloria is sitting walk outside and you will see Gertrude lying on the ground. Now you understand why the chances to speak with her are few. Search her body. Go back into the billiard room and tell Gloria about Gertrude. If you go back out Gertrude will be gone. Go to the end of the hall and go out the back doors. Go left and you will witness Wilbur and Clarence speaking. They will stop and go into the house when they see you. Follow them until they cross the hall into the dining room. Them move the mirror and watch the conversation through the holes in the painting. Then look through the other painting and watch Ethel jabber on to Polly, the bird. Go into the parlor (where gloria is) and speak with her, she will not talk to you for most of the game. Then go to the passage behind the clock. Look into the holes closest to you, and watch Gloria break Clarence’s heart (like anyone cares, he’s a jerk!). Then leave and go upstairs. If you hadn’t already gotten the hanky from outside of Gertrude and Gloria’s room, get it know. Go into Henri’s room and through into the doctor’s room, look at the doctor’s bag on the bed. Go into the hall. Then move the cabinet on the right side and look through the eyes into Rudy and Clarance’s room and notice Rudy in his room by himself. Then leave and walk into his room and watch him put the moves on Fifi. Then leave and go up to the attic and into Fifi’s room and ask her about everybody. Go back down to Rudy’s room and talk to him. Then go downstairs and into the kitchen.

Act III
9:00

You will find Celie and Lillian talking. Ask Lillian about everyone. Go outside and throw the soup bone. The dog will go and get it and when he does look in his doghouse. You will find a necklace, which is very important. Go back through the kitchen and dining room and across the hall into the library where Wilbur’s chair will be knocked over and a poker and some feathers will be on the ground. Get the poker and look at the magazine that is on the table. Then go into the next room and walk out the door. Go one screen left and open the door of the dollhouse. You’ll notice when you get in there that your friend Lillian has gone a little psycho. Leave the dollhouse. Go right, then go right on the far side of the house. Continue going right until you find Celie’s shack. Knock on the door, when she open’s the door show her the necklace. She will let you in. Ask her for the carrot, then get it. Question Celie and leave her house. Go left once and open the cellar door. Ask Jeeves for the crackers, then take them from the night side-table (HINT: If you give the crackers to Polly every once and a while, he will give you some useful info.). Go back into the house, into Henri’s office, and then go outside. Go right twice then down once. You will find yourself at the carriage house. Go inside. Take the oil off the counter. Then look in the carriage and get the crow bar. Go up one screen and into the barn. Give Blaze the carrot from Celie’s house. Open the gate and get the lantern. Leave the barn. Go into the house and to the armor in the main hall. Oil the helmet then open it. You will get a valve-crank, and you will read a letter addressed to Sarah, from her parents. You can use the crank on the shaft in the hedge garden at anytime, turn it and the fountain will work. Go into the passage behind the clock and get the cane. Then go upstairs into the passage behind the cabinet on the right hand side. Look into the eyes at Rudy and Clarence. They are in their room (HINT: There are doors from the passage into each room. Use them all to get extra points at the end of the game.) Enter the Colonel’s room, he should be gone. Look inside the cannon on the far wall, you should see a key, take it. Go to the elevator, if it is not there exit the room and then enter again, until it is. Once inside the elevator, type “put key in keyhole”, you hear a click. Type “go up.” Once you are in the attic read the newspapers beside the elevator to learn about the Colonel. Go down and you should see an open yellow and blue trunk, type “look in trunk” and you will notice some army clothes. Go back downstairs and outside. Go into the chapel, the carriage house or the barn. You should find Wilbur there (if you don’t, look round outside of the house). Search Wilbur’s body, you should find his monocle which you will use as a magnify glass. (Hint: look at every clue you find or object you pick up with the monocle). Go back inside and take this opportunity to look at the colonel’s gun (in the study) and open both cabinets and look at the weapons inside. Leave. Go upstairs, twice, and into Fifi’s room.
